Description

Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another.” – Plato Opened in 1968, Armagh Planetarium and Observatory is the longest running planetarium in the British Isles. With lots of interactive displays, children are able to learn about the galaxy and beyond, and can watch the latest news from space in real-time. There are many activities to engage your imagination including building your very own space rocket…blast off! Don’t forget to visit the Celestial Cathedral to view a collection of gallery images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The 12m diameter Dome is a distinctive feature of the Planetarium and has witnessed the development of new technology over the past 50 years. Initially equipped with a starball Goto projector, Armagh Planetarium and Observatory has since pioneered the introduction of the video revolution into planetaria. Today, Armagh Planetarium is equipped with a state-of-the art digital projector system providing an immersive experience under the full dome. One of the key attractions at the Armagh Planetarium is a newly refurbished Digital Theatre that offers a brilliant audio and visual experience of shows. Purpose built reclining seats will allow you to fully experience the immersive 3D projection over the entire dome. The fun doesn’t stop when you step outside of the Planetarium, outside as there is 14 acres of Astropark to explore, a landscape dotted with scale planets that make up a model of the Universe. Walk through the Solar System, into the Milky Way and beyond as you marvel at how minuscule earth is compared to other planets, and how small everything is when compared with the sun. Did you know? Space is completely silent – there is no atmosphere in space which means that sound has no way to travel to be heard!
