Description

Hillsborough Castle is a stunning 18th century Georgian House nestled amongst over 100 acres of well-kept gardens. Steeped in history, the castle has been used as a family home, as well as a royal residence, and has attracted visitors from across the globe. The official Northern Ireland residence of HM The Queen, this immaculate Georgian house, which is surrounded by magnificent floral gardens, was built in the 1770s by Wills Hill, known later as 1st Marquess of Downshire. Generations of the Hill family have lived here, thus giving the town its name. The Castle’s grounds offers significant contrasts of native woodland, streams and waterways, gardens with neatly trimmed lawns and meadows, as well as specimen trees and rare plants. Did You Know? Hillsborough Castle is not a castle: it is in fact a stately home, built in 1797 for Wills Hill, 1st Marquess of Downshire. Within the grounds is Granville Garden, home to the largest rhododendron in Europe.
