Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail, also known as the Stairway To Heaven; is a meandering pathway through lush pastures and blanket bog.
Description
Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail, often referred to as the Stairway To Heaven; is located in the heart of County Fermanagh, and close to the famous Marble Arch Caves.
Cuilcagh Boardwalk, which is privately owned by the Sheridan Family; is approximately 7 miles (11km) from start to finish, the magnificent boardwalk meanders through a large expanse of colourful blanket bog in Northern Ireland.
As you begin your journey, the first part of the walk passes through a limestone landscape before continuing along the gravel track. After a short walk the landscape starts to change to blanket bog. On the horizon the unmistakable flat-topped ridge of Cuilcagh Mountain can be seen.
After 2.5 miles (4km), you start the ascent of Cuilcagh Mountain, negotiated by a boardwalk which provides protection to the sensitive blanket bog beneath.
Your final ascent is via a steep section of steps – these are not for the faint of heart! Climb sure-footed and steadily, meandering and weaving your way through a rugged boulder landscape; and you eventually reach the spectacular viewing platform.
The climb to reach the viewing platform may be steep – but we’re sure you’ll agree once you get there, the views are breathtaking of the lowlands and surrounding countryside. Don’t forget to take a camera – snap!
Positioned precariously at the edge of the mountain plateau; the viewing platform rewards walkers with breath-taking views across the landscape and an opportunity to take a well-deserved rest before starting your descent.
Did you know?
Cuilcagh Mountain was closed in 2012 due to the amount of damage being incurred by walkers and adventurers tramping over the delicate bog land. Cuilcagh Boardwalk, which opened in 2015; was constructed to protect the very sensitive habitat of Cuilcagh Mountain from the heavy footfall of walkers.
