Description

Skydome Yurt is a magical dwelling located at Lough Mardal Lodge on a stunning lakeside setting in County Donegal. Experience the unique charm of a Yurt, with wooden lattice walls and radial rafters, each evoking a sense of the exotic. Originally the homes of the nomads of Central Asia, these modern-day Yurts have been adapted for glamping enthusiasts. Additionally, our stylish Yurt offers high-tech insulation, warmth and complete durability. A perfect haven for seeking refuge, especially when the occasional temperamental weather hits the north west coast of Ireland! Our Skydome Yurt sits on a lakeside setting of 90 acres of beautiful bogland, ensuring seclusion and privacy. The Yurt sleeps up to 4 people and is luxuriously furnished with a comfortable seating area. Sheepskins and handmade Donegal tweed woollen blankets adorn our individually styled Skydome Yurt, adding a cosy touch to its ambiance. For a cosy night of slumber, rest comfortably with a heavy 15Tog duvet, fluffed pillows and crisp bed linen. The Yurt has a private veranda with beautiful views of lake, mountain and forest. Feel your shoulders drop, and allow the stresses of the modern world to disappear. Surround yourself with beautiful scenery and experience the tranquility of nature’s embrace. Furthermore, our glamping site in County Donegal is pet friendly and we encourage you to bring your dog for the adventure. Our accommodation at Lough Mardal Lodge is unique, and what’s more, completely off-grid. Staying guests can enjoy all the facilities of the Communal Lodge, a unique and beautiful eco building constructed out of straw-bales, complete with a grass roof. The Communal Lodge has a very large fully equipped self-catering kitchen, dining area, toilets and wet room showers (no shared changing areas). In addition, the main feature is the striking Reciprocal Room, a hang-out space with spiralling beams, offering stunning panoramic views. Cosy up in front of the huge fireplace with a book, play cards, or plan the day’s activities. The Lodge’s thermal mass and underfloor heating offer a warm refuge after a dip in the lake or a day’s hiking. On site activities include swimming, fishing and hiking. Similarly, upon request, we can arrange nearby activities for guests, such as surfing and beach horse-riding. Our charming glamping site is located 20 minutes from Donegal Town, just 5km off the Wild Atlantic Way. The site has lush wildflower meadows and glistening lake shorelines. Additionally, soft mossy bogland and heather-covered hills provide sweeping panoramic views of Donegal Bay and neighbouring mountain ranges. Furthermore, two of Donegal’s finest beaches are within a 10 minute drive. Eco Ethos – The Lodge building is a natural building – it was made as eco as possible using locally sourced roundwood timber, strawbales and lime for the external walls and cob (earth, sand and straw) for the internal walls. On top there is green roof alive with the grasses and wildflowers excavated from the earth around it, blending the building with the landscape from which it came. Strawbales are a wonderful construction material which leave a very small carbon footprint due to its sustainable properties. Furthermore, straw is 100% biodegradable (when the time comes) and its high-insulation qualities make it extremely energy efficient. As an Intermediary Member of Sustainable Travel Ireland, we believe passionately in the importance of protecting our natural environment. Staff and guests at Lough Mardal Lodge must respect the Sustainability Policy in place. We do not claim to tick every sustainability box, but little by little, we are getting there. Our ethos is to offer a more responsible holiday experience to the ever-increasing number of people who now wish to holiday more conscientiously.
